Despite the military defeat of the Polish Army in September , the Polish government itself never surrendered, instead evacuating West, where it formed the Polish government in Exile.

These institutions included the police, the courts , and schools. In response to the occupation, Poles formed one of the largest underground movements in Europe.

In the beginning of , it had reached a strength of about , In the summer of when Operation Tempest begun AK reached its highest membership numbers.

Estimates of AK membership in the first half of and summer that year vary, with about , being common. The uprising, receiving little assistance from the nearby Soviet forces, eventually failed, significantly reducing the Home Army's power and position.

The Polish civilian population suffered under German occupation in many ways. Large numbers were expelled from land intended for German colonisation, and forced to resettle in the General-Government area.

Hundreds of thousands of Poles were deported to Germany for forced labour in industry and agriculture, where many thousands died.

Poles were also conscripted for labour in Poland, and were held in labour camps all over the country, again with a high death rate. There was a general shortage of food, fuel for heating and medical supplies, and there was a high death rate among the Polish population as a result.

Finally, thousands of Poles were killed as reprisals for resistance attacks on German forces or for other reasons. Poland had a large Jewish population, and according to Davies, more Jews were both killed and rescued in Poland, than in any other nation, the rescue figure usually being put at between , and , The organisation saved thousands.

Emphasis was placed on protecting children, as it was nearly impossible to intervene directly against the heavily guarded transports.

The Germans implemented several different laws to separate Poles and Jews in the ghettos with Poles living on the "Aryan Side" and the Jews living on the "Jewish Side", despite the risk of death many Poles risked their lives by forging "Aryan Papers" for Jews to make them appear as non-Jewish Poles so they could live on the Aryan side and avoid Nazi persecution.

Some three million gentile Polish citizens perished during the course of the war, over two million of whom were ethnic Poles the remainder being mostly Ukrainians and Belarusians.

The vast majority of those killed were civilians, mostly killed by the actions of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Aside from being sent to Nazi concentration camps , most ethnic Poles died through shelling and bombing campaigns, mass executions, forced starvation, revenge murder, ill health, and slave labour.

Along with Auschwitz II-Birkenau , the main six extermination camps in occupied Poland were used predominantly to exterminate Jews. Stutthof concentration camp was used for mass extermination of Poles.

A number of civilian labour camps Gemeinschaftslager for Poles Polenlager were established inside Polish territory. Many Poles died in German camps. The first non-German prisoners at Auschwitz were Poles who were the majority of inmates there until when the systematic killing of the Jews began.

The first killing by poison gas at Auschwitz involved Poles and Soviet prisoners of war. Many Poles and other Central and Eastern Europeans were also sent to concentration camps in Germany: over 35, to Dachau , 33, to the camp for women at Ravensbrück , 30, to Mauthausen and 20, to Sachsenhausen.

Offsetting this was the German campaign of extermination of the Polish intelligentsia and other elements thought likely to resist e.

Operation Tannenberg. From , disease and hunger also began to reduce the population. Poles were deported in large numbers to work as forced labour in Germany: eventually about a million were deported, and many died in Germany.

The estimates vary; Prof. There were also , refugees from areas occupied by Germany, most of them Jews , Initially the Soviet occupation gained support among some members of the linguistic minorities who had chafed under the nationalist policies of the Second Polish Republic.

Much of the Ukrainian population initially welcomed the unification with the Soviet Ukraine because twenty years earlier their attempt at self-determination failed during both the Polish—Ukrainian War and the Ukrainian—Soviet War.

There were large groups of prewar Polish citizens, notably Jewish youth and, to a lesser extent, the Ukrainian peasants, who saw the Soviet power as an opportunity to start political or social activity outside their traditional ethnic or cultural groups.

Their enthusiasm however faded with time as it became clear that the Soviet repressions were aimed at all groups equally, regardless of their political stance.

British historian Simon Sebag Montefiore states that Soviet terror in the occupied eastern Polish lands was as cruel and tragic as the Nazis' in the west.

The Soviets also executed about 65, Poles. Soldiers of the Red Army and their officers behaved like conquerors, looting and stealing Polish treasures.

When Stalin was told about it, he answered: "If there is no ill will, they [the soldiers] can be pardoned".

In one notorious massacre, the NKVD-the Soviet secret police—systematically executed 21, Poles, among them 14, former Polish officers, including political leaders, government officials, and intellectuals.

Some 4, of these were uncovered in mass graves in Katyn Forest by the Nazis in , who then invited an international group of neutral representatives and doctors to study the corpses and confirm Soviet guilt, but the findings from the study were denounced by the Allies as "Nazi propaganda".

The Soviet Union had ceased to recognize the Polish state at the start of the invasion. The Soviets therefore did not classify Polish military prisoners as prisoners of war but as rebels against the new legal government of Western Ukraine and Western Byelorussia.

The Poles and the Soviets re-established diplomatic relations in , following the Sikorski-Mayski Agreement ; but the Soviets broke them off again in after the Polish government demanded an independent examination of the recently discovered Katyn burial pits.

They moved Lithuania into the Soviet sphere of influence and shifted the border in Poland to the east, giving Germany more territory.

This amounted to about , square kilometres of land, inhabited by The Red Army had originally sowed confusion among the locals by claiming that they were arriving to save Poland from the Nazis.

Polish and Jewish citizens may at first have preferred a Soviet regime to a German one, [] but the Soviets soon proved as hostile and destructive towards the Polish people and their culture as the Nazis.

The Soviet base of support was strengthened by a land reform program initiated by the Soviets in which most of the owners of large lots of land were labeled " kulaks " and dispossessed of their land, which was then divided among poorer peasants.

However, the Soviet authorities then started a campaign of forced collectivisation , which largely nullified the earlier gains from the land reform as the peasants generally did not want to join the Kolkhoz farms, nor to give away their crops for free to fulfill the state-imposed quotas.

While Germans enforced their policies based on racism, the Soviet administration justified their Stalinist policies by appealing to the Soviet ideology, [] which in reality meant the thorough Sovietization of the area.

Immediately after their conquest of eastern Poland, the Soviet authorities started a campaign of Sovietization [] [] of the newly acquired areas.

No later than several weeks after the last Polish units surrendered, on 22 October , the Soviets organized staged elections to the Moscow-controlled Supreme Soviets legislative body of Western Byelorussia and Western Ukraine.

Subsequently, all institutions of the dismantled Polish state were closed down and reopened under the Soviet appointed supervisors.

Lwow University and many other schools were reopened soon but they were restarted anew as Soviet institutions rather than continuing their old legacy.

The tuition, that along with the institution's Polonophile traditions, kept the university inaccessible to most of the rural Ukrainophone population, was abolished and several new chairs were opened, particularly the chairs of Russian language and literature.

The chairs of Marxism-Leninism , Dialectical and Historical Materialism aimed at strengthening of the Soviet ideology were opened as well. Forty-five new faculty members were assigned to it and transferred from other institutions of Soviet Ukraine, mainly the Kharkiv and Kiev universities.

On 15 January the Lviv University was reopened and started to teach in accordance with Soviet curricula. Simultaneously, Soviet authorities attempted to remove the traces of Polish history of the area by eliminating much of what had any connection to the Polish state or even Polish culture in general.

All the media became controlled by Moscow. Soviet authorities implemented a political regime similar to a police state , [] [] [] [] based on terror.

All Polish parties and organizations were disbanded. Only the Communist Party was allowed to exist along with organizations subordinated to it. All organized religions were persecuted.

All enterprises were taken over by the state, while agriculture was made collective. The first victims of the new order were approximately , Polish prisoners of war captured by the USSR during and after the Polish Defensive War see Polish prisoners of war in Soviet Union after Those who lived in the German zone of occupation were transferred to the Germans.

About 23, of POWs were separated from the rest and sent to construct a highway, with a planned release in December Similar policies were applied to the civilian population as well.

The Soviet authorities regarded service for the pre-war Polish state as a "crime against revolution" [] and "counter-revolutionary activity", [] and subsequently started arresting large numbers of Polish intelligentsia , politicians, civil servants and scientists, but also ordinary people suspected of posing a threat to the Soviet rule.

Initially aimed primarily at possible political opponents, by January the NKVD aimed its campaign also at its potential allies, including the Polish communists and socialists.

In and the first half of , the Soviets deported more than 1,, Poles, most in four mass deportations. The first deportation took place 10 February , with more than , sent to northern European Russia; the second on 13 April , sending , primarily to Kazakhstan; a third wave in June—July totaled more than ,; the fourth occurred in June , deporting , Upon resumption of Polish-Soviet diplomatic relations in , it was determined based on Soviet information that more than , of the deportees had died — a large part of those dead being children, who had comprised about a third of deportees.

Approximately , former Polish citizens were arrested during the two years of Soviet occupation. According to the Soviet law, all residents of the annexed area, dubbed by the Soviets as citizens of former Poland , [] automatically acquired Soviet citizenship.

However, actual conferral of citizenship still required the individual's consent and the residents were strongly pressured for such consent.

In addition, the Soviets exploited past ethnic tension between Poles and other ethnic groups, inciting and encouraging violence against Poles calling the minorities to "rectify the wrongs they had suffered during twenty years of Polish rule".

Soviet propaganda claimed that unfair treatment of non-Poles by the Second Polish Republic was a justification of its dismemberment.

Soviet officials openly incited mobs to perform killings and robberies [] The death toll of the initial Soviet-inspired terror campaign remains unknown.

While formal Polish sovereignty was almost immediately restored when the forces of Nazi Germany were expelled in , in reality the country remained under firm Soviet control as it remained occupied by the Soviet Army Northern Group of Forces until To this day the events of those and the following years are one of the stumbling blocks in Polish-Russian foreign relations.

Both occupiers wanted not only to gain Polish territory, but also to destroy Polish culture and the Polish nation as a whole. Polish war dead include 5,, victims of Nazi crimes against ethnic Poles and the Holocaust , the treatment of Polish citizens by occupiers included , deaths during the Soviet occupation in —41 and about , Poles killed in —44 in the Ukraine.

Losses by ethnic group were 3,, Jews; 2,, ethnic Poles ; , Ukrainians and Belarusians. The official Polish government report prepared in listed 6,, war deaths out of a population of 27,, ethnic Poles and Jews; this report excluded ethnic Ukrainian and Belarusian losses.

Sarmatian Review. Piotrowski argues that from the very beginning, it was Stalin's aim to ensure that an independent Poland would never reemerge in the postwar period.

The prisons, ghettos , internment , transit, labor and extermination camps , roundups, mass deportations, public executions , mobile killing units , death marches , deprivation, hunger, disease, and exposure all testify to the 'inhuman policies of both Hitler and Stalin and 'were clearly aimed at the total extermination of Poland's citizens, both Jews and Christians.

The music video for "Pussy" was released on 16 September , at GMT, released especially for the adult website Visit-x. Any references to the video on the official website have since been deleted.

In Europe, the single was released on 15 January , and in the U. On 23 April , Rammstein released their video " Haifisch ".

Unlike the video for "Ich tu dir weh", it contains more of a narrative rather than a performance. It was their first North American appearance in nine years.

The band announced that their last tour dates of were to be in the Americas. The tickets sold out in a very short time under 20 minutes. This concert sold out within the first hour of tickets going on sale, indicating a high demand to see Rammstein in North America.

The band also visited South Africa for the first time in early and played two sold-out concerts in Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively, indicating another territory eager for the opportunity to enjoy the band live.

On 16 February , Rammstein announced that, after the massive success of their sold out Madison Square Garden show on 11 December , they would be touring North America after ten years.

Tickets went on sale 25 and 26 February to great response, with many shows completely selling out, making this tour a complete success.

Rammstein released a greatest hits album titled Made in Germany — on 2 December It contains one previously unreleased track, " Mein Land " which was released as a single on 11 November with another track, "Vergiss uns nicht", that was released at a later date.

The compilation is available in three different editions: The standard edition; this includes a CD with normal songs from their back catalog.

Special edition; has the same CD from the standard edition and an extra CD with Rammstein songs that have been remixed by different artists such as Scooter.

Finally, the super deluxe edition; has the two previously mentioned CDs and three DVDs with interviews and the making of videos from different music videos.

It premiered on the band's official website on 11 November A full European tour in support of Made in Germany began in November and spanned all the way to May The Swedish industrial band Deathstars supported the band during the first two legs of the European tour.

Twelve additional festival performances for summer were announced the same day, including Wacken Open Air festival and Rock Werchter. On 22 November , Rammstein announced via Facebook that they will be releasing a video collection featuring all music videos entitled Videos — , plus two unreleased music videos for " Mein Herz Brennt ", originally featured on the album Mutter.

The first video premiered on the band's Vimeo , while the second premiered on a promotional website. Both videos were directed by Zoran Bihac. A single of the song was released on the same day, which included an edited version of the original and a new song titled 'Gib Mir Deine Augen' as a b-side.

He indicated that the band may "start thinking" about a new album in In September , band co-founder Richard Kruspe then working with his side band, Emigrate [30] said the band was preparing some more live DVDs and that they were taking some time off from the studio.

The band would meet again in to decide if the time was right to return to the studio. According to Peter Tägtgren — who works with frontman Till Lindemann on their side-project Lindemann — Till would be regrouping with his Rammstein bandmates later in to start pre-production on a new full-length album, which normally takes two years to be released.

In early August , Rammstein released a trailer for an upcoming project, titled "In Amerika". In an interview in March , Richard Kruspe said that Rammstein had about 35 new songs that were close to completion, though the release date of the band's seventh studio album was still an open question.

Also in May, it was revealed that Sky van Hoff would be working with the band on their next album. On 18 June , it was announced via StubHub's ticketing website that Rammstein would play songs at their Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, show from their forthcoming album, then set for release late in Rammstein released the first single from their seventh album, " Deutschland ", on 28 March [47] and announced the release date of their untitled seventh studio album , 17 May Rammstein also revealed the album cover which consisted of a single, unlit match which fans say represents their love of fire and simplicity.

Shortly after its release, the album reached No. They were due to play shows in Europe and North America in , but were forced to postpone them due to the COVID pandemic impacting the two continents.

The dates were rescheduled for During the COVID pandemic, which forced the band to remain sheltered during a lockdown in Germany, the band returned to writing music, Christoph Schneider had confirmed in a German podcast.

The release will be available both digitally and physically, as a CD housed in a digipak as well as a double heavyweight, colored vinyl. Rammstein's sound has primarily been described as Neue Deutsche Härte , [58] [59] [60] [61] industrial metal , [62] [63] [64] [65] hard rock , [66] [67] [68] [69] [70] [71] and gothic metal , [72] [73] [74] [75] while also being described as nu metal , [76] [77] [78] alternative metal , [79] symphonic metal , [80] progressive metal , [81] and " techno -metal".

New Zealand's Southland Times 17 December suggested that Till Lindemann's "booming, sub-sonic voice" would send "the peasants fleeing into their barns and bolting their doors", while The New York Times 9 January commented that on the stage, "Mr.

Lindemann gave off an air of such brute masculinity and barely contained violence that it seemed that he could have reached into the crowd, snatched up a fan, and bitten off his head".

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic commented that "their blend of industrial noise, grinding metal guitars, and operatic vocals is staggeringly powerful".

Nearly all of Rammstein's songs are in German. Songs they have recorded entirely or partly in English include: a cover of Depeche Mode 's song " Stripped " and English renditions of "Engel", "Du hast", and "Amerika".

Oliver Riedel commented that "[the] German language suits heavy metal music. French might be the language of love, but German is the language of anger".

The band's lyrics, as sung by Till Lindemann, are an essential element of their music, and shape the perception by fans and a wider public.

Among other things that are seen as controversial, Rammstein also refers to classical German literature, e.

Also several of their songs are allegedly inspired by real-life events. The lyrics of the song " Deutschland " contain the lines "Deutschland!

Rammstein are particularly known for their over-the-top live performances, making such extensive use of pyrotechnics that fans eventually coined the motto, "Other bands play, Rammstein burns!

Following an accident in Berlin on 27 September , in which some burning decorative parts of the stage collapsed, [88] the band started using professionals to handle the pyrotechnics.

Lindemann subsequently qualified as a licensed pyrotechnician, and often spends entire songs engulfed in flames.

He has suffered multiple burns on his ears, head, and arms. The band's stage costumes are also known for being outlandish.

During the Reise, Reise Tour, they wore lederhosen , corsets , and military-inspired uniforms with German steel helmets ; during the Mutter Tour , the group kept to the themes of the album artwork and descended onto the stage from a giant uterus while wearing diapers.

During the Völkerball concert, among others, Lindemann changed costumes between songs and dressed accordingly for each. For example, for the song "Mein Teil", he was dressed as a blood-soaked chef; in "Reise, Reise", he dressed as a sailor.

The rest of the band each wore their own preferred costume, but none quite as bizarre as Till's. The band's flair for costumes is evident in their music videos as well as their live shows.

In the "Keine Lust" video, all members except Lorenz are dressed in fat suits. In the "Amerika" video, all members of the band wear astronaut costumes.

Since the Mutter Tour in , Rammstein have worked with stage designer Roy Bennett, who helped the band in developing the look of the stages. At this tour, the upper level rose over 2 meters above the stage floor and had an oval entrance just beneath the drums.

At both sides of the upper level, a special lift made it possible for the band members to access both stage levels.

On the Liebe ist für alle da Tour in , the new stage still had a two-level design. This time, however, the upper level only had about half the height as on the previous tour.

Stage entrance was possible by a hydraulic ramp in the middle of the stage floor. At each end of the upper level, stairs were placed in order to gain access to both levels.

This tour included not only the extensive use of pyrotechnics, but also a massive lighting show, such as the band's logo lit up as big lamps on four enormous collapsible towers, forming the industrial backdrop of the set and being capable of different lighting effects.

During the arena shows of the Made in Germany Tour , the stage was slightly altered with new set pieces such as a large industrial fan as well as new backdrops.

The most noticeable addition was a long catwalk, connecting the main stage to a smaller stage in the middle of the audience. During the festival leg of the tour, the bridge and smaller stage were omitted.

According to Kruspe, the onstage antics are meant to get people's attention and have fun at the same time; Rammstein's motto, according to Schneider, is "do your own thing and overdo it".

Kruspe said of the stage show in July , "You have to understand that 99 per cent of the people don't understand the lyrics, so you have to come up with something to keep the drama in the show.

We have to do something. We like to have a show; we like to play with fire. We do have a sense of humour.

We do laugh about it; we have fun [ We take the music and the lyrics seriously. It's a combination of humour, theatre, and our East German culture, you know?

Their antics have also garnered controversy. In one of their more infamous moments, Lindemann engaged in simulated sodomy with Lorenz during their performance of "Bück dich" in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The New York Times described Rammstein's music as a "powerful strain of brutally intense rock Till and Flake's stage act earned them a night in jail in June after a liquid-ejecting dildo was used in a concert in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Back home in Germany, the band faced repeated accusations of fascist sympathies because of the dark and sometimes militaristic imagery of their videos and concerts, including the use of excerpts from the film Olympia by Leni Riefenstahl in the video for their cover of Depeche Mode's song "Stripped".

MTV Germany studied the lyrics, talked to the band and came away satisfied that Rammstein are apolitical; Peter Ruppert, then head of Music Programming at MTV Germany, stated that the band "aren't in any way connected with any right-wing activities".

Their cover of their debut album Herzeleid , released in Germany in , showed the band members bare-chested in a style that resembled Strength Through Joy in the eyes of some critics, who accused the band of trying to sell themselves as "poster boys for the Master Race ".

Lorenz, annoyed by the claim, has remarked it is just a photo, and should be understood as such. Herzeleid has since been given a different cover in North America, depicting the band members' faces.

The video of Deutschland , released in , sparked further controversy, as it portrays black German actress Ruby Commey appearing as Germania , which has been described as a "a calculated affront to German nationalists".

Rammstein were cited in relation to the Columbine High School massacre in , when a photo of Eric Harris wearing a Rammstein T-shirt was revealed in his 11th grade picture and written the Rammstein logo on a yearbook he signed.

In response to the shooting, the band issued a statement:. The members of Rammstein express their condolences and sympathy to all affected by the recent tragic events in Denver.

They wish to make it clear that they have no lyrical content or political beliefs that could have possibly influenced such behaviour.

Additionally, members of Rammstein have children of their own, in whom they continually strive to instill healthy and non-violent values.

Coincidentally, on 10 September , the single and video clip of Ich will "I Want" was released which portrays the band as bank robbers who want to get a message across and receiving a Goldene Kamera Golden Camera award, a German version of the Emmy award, for their "actions".

In the United States, the video clip was broadcast only late at night after the attacks of 11 September , although many media officials and politicians requested the video to be pulled from broadcast completely.

Following the conclusion of the Beslan school hostage crisis in Russia in September , the Russian authorities claimed that the terrorists had "listened to German hard rock group Rammstein on personal stereos during the siege to keep themselves edgy and fired up".

There's been a lot of talk about that, but if there are radical feelings in people anything can wake them — a painting, a picture, whatever.

It's just a coincidence that it happened to be our music. It's important to think about what caused them to make their decisions, how they became animals, not their taste in music.

Whenever something like this happens it's like "Okay, let's blame the artist". Such bullshit. Our music is made to release aggression, and people listening to it are also needed to do that, but it's not our fault.

Should we stop making hard music because bad people might like it? Pekka-Eric Auvinen, the perpetrator of the Jokela school shooting in November , also included Rammstein in one of his favorite bands.

However, he noted that the music among other things was not to blame for his decisions. On a lyric video of Mein Herz brennt , Rodger wrote: "[G]reat song to listen to while daydreaming about being a powerful ruler".

Even though Rodger wrote in his manifesto that he wished to become a dictator and punish all the people who rejected him, there was no direct link found between the band's music and the killing spree.

The Trollhättan school attack perpetrator, Anton Lundin Pettersson, used a manipulated version of the band's logo that added Nazi Germany's eagle on his Facebook page.

In October , the video for " Mein Teil " "My part" caused considerable controversy in Germany when it was released.

It takes a darkly comic view of the Armin Meiwes cannibalism case, showing a cross-dressed Schneider holding the other five band members on a leash and rolling around in mud.

The controversy did nothing to stop the single rising to No. Meiwes who was convicted of manslaughter in , then retried in and found guilty of murder [] brought a lawsuit in January against the band for infringement of rights to the story.

The band's own views of its image are sanguine; Landers has said: "We like being on the fringes of bad taste". But it serves a purpose.

We like audiences to grapple with our music, and people have become more receptive". The video for "Pussy" was released September It features hardcore pornographic scenes of nudity along with women engaging in sexual activity with body doubles of the band members.

It is the third Rammstein video to include nudity. On 5 November , their sixth studio album, Liebe ist für alle da , was placed on the Index of the Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien or BPjM Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young People , making it illegal in Germany to make the album accessible to minors or display it where it can be seen by people underage, effectively banning it from stores.

Furthermore, the advisory board took into consideration the alleged promotion of unprotected sexual intercourse in the lyrics to "Pussy".

The band, as well as several members of the German press, reacted with astonishment to the decision. Keyboardist Christian Lorenz expressed surprise at the advisory board's "parochial sense of art" and regretted their apparent inability to detect irony.

On 9 June, the band announced on their official website that the original version of the album was already available at their shop and that a release of the single "Ich tu dir weh" in Germany was planned in a short period of time.

In October , the album was judged not harmful to minors and deleted from the Index. In , Rammstein settled out of court against Apocalyptica 's former record label Sony Music Entertainment GmbH as the successor of the by now defunct affiliated label Gun Records for using Rammstein's label in marketing Apocalyptica's album Worlds Collide , which featured a track with singer Lindemann.

Twark, Axel Hildebrandt on the song "Amerika" []. The band wrote the song " Links " Links being German for "left" as a riposte to early claims that the band were neo-Nazis , and to affirm that they reside on the left side of the political spectrum.

In a interview with Rolling Stone , when asked about Nazi accusations, Lindemann stated "We come from the East and we have grown up as socialists. We used to be either punks or Goths — we hate Nazis!

And then, such a far-fetched accusation. We are doing exactly the same thing today, but no one in America or in Mexico would even get the idea to come up with something like that.

This only happens in Germany. Our reply to this animosity was, "Links ", and with that, we had made it clear where we stand politically. It's simple.

If you want to put us in a political category, we're on the left side, and that's the reason we made the song".

Drum links, zwei, drei! Then left, two, three! Another key lyric expressing the band's allegiance to the left paraphrases the titles of newspaper columns published side by side for several years in the German newspaper Bild : "Mein Herz schlägt links" "My heart beats on the left" by The Left Party co-chair and former Social Democratic Party of Germany chair Oskar Lafontaine , and "Mein Herz schlägt auf dem rechten Fleck" "My heart beats in the right place" by Peter Gauweiler of the conservative Christian Social Union.

The band also wrote the song " Amerika " as a critique of the worldwide cultural and political imperialism of the United States. Twark and Axel Hildebrandt found that the song's text and most of its video's images point toward a critique of America's cultural imperialism, political propaganda, and self-assumed role as global police force.

The song responds critically to the US invasion of Iraq in They also found that another song of theirs that is critical of the United States is " Mein Land ", believing that it critiques American racism and nationalism.

At their concert in Moscow five days later, guitarists Kruspe and Landers kissed onstage, while they embraced each other during a concert in Saint Petersburg on 2 August.

The band's support for gay rights was met with criticism in Russia. Vitaly Milonov , a member of the State Duma called the band "idiots" and said: "If they think it possible to behave in such a way, they should also consider it possible to keep this garbage away from us.

Richard Kruspe , []. Since their formation in , Rammstein have had no changes in their line-up. Richard Kruspe had said in a Revolver Magazine interview that it is because of the band respecting each other's wishes to take a break, either for personal reasons or to focus on a side project.

Kruspe currently fronts the group Emigrate while Till Lindemann began his project Lindemann in Christian "Flake" Lorenz — keyboards.
